Post Office to Close - 15/08/06
Its been announced today that Shrewsbury’s main Post
Office will close and move into the basement of WH Smith despite
campaign effots and thousands of signatures against the move.
The
Post Office announced the decision following public consultation
and major opposition from the borough council, the town’s
MP, union members and its Shrewsbury customers.

Robin Hooper, writes to the Post Office - 27/07/06
The Chief Executive of the Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough
Council, Robin Hooper, has written to the post office, setting
out the Council's opposition to the move.

Shrewsbury Council Objects to Proposed Transfer - 27/07/06
Following a debate during a Council meeting on 24th July 2006,
Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council unanimously adopted
the cross party supported motion:
"This
Council strongly objects to the proposed transfer of the Main
Post Office currently located in St Mary's Street to another
retail outlet within the town.
The
proposed new location is considered not to be in the interests
of the majority of residents and is being conducted purely
for the purpose of financial expediency of Post Office Counters
Ltd.
Furthermore
this Council deplores the proposed loss of in excess of 200
years experience provided by existing staff some of whom will
be relocated therefore enabling other areas out of Shrewsbury
to benefit.
This
Council therefore calls upon Post Office Counters Ltd to seriously
reconsider its' proposals on relocating to another site and
enable the residents of this Borough to continue to have the
benefit of the service provided by existing staff.
The
retention of "Crown Office" status is an important
symbol for Shrewsbury as the County Town of Shropshire and
such status should be maintained.
Save Our Post Office Demonstration - 26/07/06
This
coming Saturday we are planning a march through the town starting
at 12:15 outside of the Music Hall off the market square and
moving to the Post Office building on St Mary’s Street.
If
you can then we urge you to come along and support us because
the more people protesting, the larger the imapct we will
have.
